“What are you two doing?” The deep voice coming from the hallway sends a happy tremor through my body. I jump to my feet to run to Micah, but I’m stopped by the piercing pain of glass going through my foot. I look down to see blood trickling on the floor. When I sit on the couch to pull out the shard, Kieran and Emory hover around me.

“Why are you in my room?” Micah asks, angrily.

Kieran and Emory move to the side to give Micah a direct line to me. I look up and his gaze grabs mine. We stare at one another, caught in a wordless hello. Small expressions run over his face, telling me he’s relieved, happy, confused.

“Leave us,” he says quietly without looking away from me.

Kieran and Emory hurry out of the room, shutting the door behind them. Micah closes his eyes. He takes a deep breath, bows his head and mutters something under his breath. When he looks up, he stares at me in disbelief. He doesn’t seem to notice the glass crunching under his feet as he steps toward me. His lips quiver, trying to form words that won’t come.

The fire crackles and pops behind him. Micah’s eyes glisten while he studies my shaking hand, reaching for him. My hand finds his, linking our fingers together. The strong beat of his pulse thumps in his trembling fingers. I step cautiously to the floor, avoiding the glass. When I’m eye level with him, his pupils flicker. As soon as I open my mouth to tell him how much I missed him, he pulls me to his body and covers my mouth with his. Every pent up emotion is released the second he kisses me. I don’t know where this Micah came from. His mouth claims mine without reservation or fear of repercussions. I fall into his embrace, enjoying every bit of the intensity of the kiss that tells me he missed me as much as I missed him. The tension in his body falls away as his hands travel through my hair and down my back, over my hips and up my sides like he’s making sure I’m real. I’m real, Micah, I want to say but I don’t want to stop kissing him. The taste of his lips brings to life the forbidden feelings I’m done hiding. I can’t get enough of him.

 EXCERPT: I didn’t recognize the name on the street sign. Nothing about the rural road looked familiar or friendly. Tall, imposing trees and overgrown weeds choked the front of the dilapidated home. Windows were boarded up. There was a gaping hole where the front door had been. I shivered, wanting to be far away from here…wherever here was. Walking felt harder than it should be, and I stumbled off the chilly asphalt, wincing as sharp gravel dug into my feet. My bare feet? I stopped and looked down. Chipped pink nail polish peeked through the dirt…and blood. Mud caked the legs of my pants, leaving the hems stiff. It made sense, seeing as how I wasn’t wearing any shoes, but the blood…I didn’t understand why there was blood staining the knees of my jeans. My vision clouded and dulled, as if a gray film had been dropped over my eyes. As I stared at the weathered asphalt under my feet, large and smooth rocks replaced the tiny stones. Something dark and oily seeped over the rocks, slipping through the cracks. Sucking in a sharp gasp, I blinked and the image was gone. Hands trembling, I raised them. They were also covered with dirt and scratches. My nails were broken, bloodied. A silver ring wrapped, encased in soil, around my thumb. Air froze in my chest as my gaze crawled over my arms. The sleeves of my sweater were torn, revealing pale flesh covered in bruises and gashes. My legs started to shake as I swayed forward. I tried to remember how this had happened, but my head was empty—a black void where nothing existed. A car drove by, coasting to a stop a few feet in front of me. Somewhere in the trenches of my subconscious, I recognized the flashing red and blue lights as a source of safety. Elegantly scrawled along the black-and-gray side of the cruiser were the words ADAMS COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT. Adams County? A flash of familiarity came and went. The driver’s door opened, and a deputy stepped out. He said something into the radio on his shoulder before he looked at me. “Miss?” He started around the cruiser, taking tentative steps. He looked young for a deputy. Barely out of high school and able to carry a gun seemed wrong somehow. Was I in high school? I didn’t know. “We’ve received some calls into dispatch concerning you,” he said gently. “Are you okay?” I tried to respond, but only a hoarse squeak came out. Clearing my throat, I winced as the motion scratched and pulled. “I…I don’t know.” “Okay.” The deputy held up his hands as he approached me, as if I were a skittish deer about to bolt. “My name is Deputy Rhode. I’m here to help you. Do you know what you’re doing out here?” “No.” Knots formed in my belly. I didn’t even know where here was. His smile strained. “What’s your name?” My name? Everyone knew their name, but as I stared at the deputy, I couldn’t answer his question. The knots started twisting more. “I don’t…I don’t know what my name is.” He blinked, and the smile was completely gone. “You don’t remember anything?” I tried again, concentrating on the empty space between my ears. That was how it felt. And I knew that wasn’t good. My eyes started to tear up. “Miss, it’s okay. We’ll get you taken care of.” He reached out, lightly taking hold of my arm. “We’ll get this sorted.” Deputy Rhode led me around the back of his cruiser. I didn’t want to sit behind the Plexiglas, because I knew that wasn’t good. Only bad people sat behind the glass in police cruisers. I wanted to object, but before I could say anything, he settled me into the seat and wrapped a coarse blanket around my shoulders. Before he locked me in the bad part of the car, he knelt and smiled reassuringly. “Everything’s going to be okay.” But I knew he was lying, trying to make me feel better. It didn’t work. How could everything be okay when I didn’t know my own name?

Love is All You Need. A Giant Valentine's Day Giveaway.

Valentine's Day: it's easy to be a cynic. Valentine's Day was created by the greeting card and chocolate industries. And I certainly don't think that Valentine's Day provides an excuse to be lazy about your relationships for the rest of the year, but I do think it's nice that once a year we have a day especially set aside to celebrate all the ways love alters us and our lives. I think it's meant to remind us that we should be prizing those relationships all year. 

Now I'm not saying that Valentine's Day needs to be a massive commercial venture. Homemade cards and small but thoughtful gestures can be be the best. So maybe sneak a special treat into your significant other's lunch bag, make them a mix "tape" or get up early and warm the car up before they get in it.Or go all out with rose petals on the bed and a reservation at a nice restaurant. Though, you may want to get on that if you haven't yet. The point is, that big heart on the calender isn't meant to tell you to purchase the requisite flowers and chocolates, it's meant to remind you to take a moment to appreciate your love.* How you do so is entirely up to you.

And please, love is love, feel free to celebrate your friend love or the love you have for your nephew, your mom, your neighbor or your cat. Probably best to avoid celebrating your love for your neighbor's cat. That might get weird.

Since Vincent is a fellow science fiction fan, I asked him to list his top ten favorite romantic moments in the genre! Here's his response. There's some great choices here.

My top ten Romantic moments in sci-fi, fantasy and other genre books, movies and/or TV.

Han & Leah

There were 2 moments in Empire Strikes Back. One was that kiss on the Millennium Falcon while they were hiding from the Empire. That was such a cool scene. But there’s something about the scene where Han is about to get frozen. Leah tells him, “I love you.” And his reply? “I know.”

Spiderman & Mary Jane.

Because I was a nerd of a kid that dreamed of being able to save the girl and get a kiss. And he got to do it while hanging upside down from a web! How cool is that?

Worf & Dax

That spectacular moment where our favorite cuddly Klingon Warrior tied the knot with the Trill Jadizia Dax. (Wonder how it felt for Worf to hear Captain Sisko call his new bride “Old Man.”)  Let us celebrate by drinking blood wine and hitting ourselves with pain sticks!

Harry & Ginny

In Half Blood Prince, the gang at Hogwarts are in potions class where their new potions professor (Horace Slughorn) has a cauldron of a love potion brewing. Hermione explains that it smells different to each person depending on what they love. Harry smells smelled treacle tart, the woody scent of broomstick handle, and "something flowery that he thought he might have smelled at the Burrow.” In a later chapter, we come to realize that was the scent of Ginny Weasley’s perfume. At that moment, hundreds of thousands of Potter fans who had been shipping Harry/Ginny did fist bumps!

Ron & Hermione

Since were in the Potterverse, how many of us out there yelled, “It’s about bloody time!” when Hermione kissed Ron because he showed concern for the house elves?

Princess Buttercup & the Man in Black.

In the Princess Bride, we’re all yelling “Assss youuu wishhhhh” as we’re rolling down the mountain. Only ‘True Love’ can conquer death.

James T. Kirk & Edith Keeler

So this one wasn’t such a happily ever after as much as it was a tragic love story. Falling in love with a woman who must die or you sacrifice the future was an amazing tale of tortured love. I can still hear Spock yelling out, “No Jim” just at that heartbreaking instant. Not all love stories have a happy ending.

Zoe & Wash

They were a wonderful example of a modern married couple in the year 2517, traveling the verse together, him flying Serenity and her as second in command. Zoe was kick ass, and Wash played with dinosaurs. It ended tragically. The kind of ending that really goes right through you. (That was bad.)

Glen & Maggie

I’ve got to include the couple that first ‘hooked up’ in a pharmacy in the middle of a world infested with zombies. I’m rooting for these two to not become walker chow on the show.

King Kong & Ann Darrow

Here’s the crown jewel or romance in film. I guess I kind of identify a little with Kong. Poor guy. All he wanted was to show his girl a night out on the town. But that ice skating scene is magic.
